Default What is there for me?

Hello, I am a long time WoW raider and the thing that draws me to it is the sense of competitive PVE. I am very interested in GW2 as it looks great. However, what does GW2 have to offer for someone who is not just interested in pve for pves sake, but, pve in a competitive format?

Thanks

Yes, please specify competitive PvE... Guild Wars 1 for instance doesn't have a very competitive PvE, most players try to actually work together for common goals rather than trying to be "the best" (of course there are always the few)

I cannot for the life of me figure out why GW2Guru would send you here. I checked out your twin thread over there, and it seems you're looking for "realm glory" in PvE -- getting recognition for slaying the big bad first? If that's the case, GW1 is even less the game for you than GW2 has the potential to be. Your missions and quests here are instanced, so only you and your chosen party of 4-8 other players or AI heroes know what you're doing out there. Everyone's progression is individualized, so what you do in PvE pretty much has no impact on the player community at large.

I think GW1 would feel too "single player" to you. However, judging by what we hear about GW2, how players' participation in events will have an impact on the world at large, I think that game will be more to your liking.

In WoW (and other games like SWtOR), you can meet up with people from the other 'faction' during PvE play and, in some cases, be forced to fight them (because they attack you). I think that's what he means by 'competitive PvE'.
Most games that have this 'feature' will also have "PvE only" servers (or realms) where this is not allowed.
In my experience, this mostly comes down to a bunch of high level ass-hats trying to beat up on lower level characters (ganking), which can get really annoying, really quickly, if you're not into it.
In WoW, if I recall, after being killed, you had to ghost travel back to your corpse in order to respawn, which meant the ganker could just camp your body and kill you again (weee!) until some friendly high-levels came to the rescue.
In SWtOR, thankfully, they have the option to just respawn back at a medic outpost, so there's not much sense in camping a corpse. You still get a few level 50s (mostly Sith, of course) going around trying to gank, but it's only a minor nuisance in that case, and they seem to tire of it quickly (and much of the time the friendly level 50s don't even bother to go after them. )

Anyway - GW2 is also setup to where you can have PvP during PvE, although I'm not quite sure how that works out since there's no 'factions'. They have said that GW2 will have both PvP (meaning PvP during PvE) and PvE-only 'realms' (and possibly RP realms as well)

I thought that one was called PK (player killing)?

That's called World PVP. At no point can it be mistaken for PVE. The second P stands for Human Player. The E is the Environment, but it's simpler to think of it as anything the computer will throw at you.

PVE can have ranking, though. Who does what, and how well. There are websites dedicated to tracking that Guilds/Clans/whatever do, and they have point values. Top ranked Guilds have much 'prestige'. At least they think they do. That's competitive PVE.

It's a foreign concept in GW, though, so it's understandable that you don't know what it is. This game doesn't need it. And I'll be really sad to see it come into the game, however, if that's what most people want, whatever. With it, though, comes inflated egos, and much name calling.
